Enrollment FAQs

What is a charter school?

In 1992, the California Charter Schools Act was passed in order to encourage innovation and increase opportunities for students, families, and teachers within the public education sphere. A charter school is a tuition-free public school that operates independently from local school districts. As schools of choice, all charter schools are open to any student who wants to apply, regardless of where he or she lives within the state. If more students apply than space permits, charter schools are required to hold a lottery for admission. There are no admission tests or tuition fees at charter schools. Charter schools have flexibility in the design of their school programs, their personnel decisions, and their resource allocation. In exchange for this freedom, public charter schools are held accountable for their school's performance, including: student achievement, organizational and fiscal management, and stakeholder satisfaction.

What does it mean that Gateway High School is a “college preparatory” school?

At Gateway, it is our goal that all of our students attend college after graduating from our school. By choosing to attend Gateway, you are committing to this goal as well. In your time at Gateway, we will help you prepare for success in college and we will expect you to do your part too. This means doing your homework every day; coming to school ready to learn and paying attention in class; it means seeking help by asking questions and going to tutoring when you need it; it means meeting all behavioral and attendance expectations of our school.

What are the school hours?

Gateway follows a block schedule. On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, school starts at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 3:35 p.m. On Wednesday and Friday, school starts at 9:05 a.m. and ends at 3:35 p.m.

Does Gateway have a tutoring program?

Yes, students may attend after-school tutoring Monday through Thursday, 3:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Click here for more information about the Gateway Tutoring Program.
